The III Open Competition
in technical and computer graphics.

Dear Colleagues!

You are invited to participate in the Third Open Competition in technical and computer graphics.
The judging of the competition will be made by the jury on March 25-29, 1999.

Young people not older than 20, students of secondary educational institutions, additional (supplementary) studies educational institutions, first and second year university students who live in the Samara region, in other regions of the russian Federation, and also in countries of the Independent States Union and foreign countries are welcome to participate in the competition.

The competition will take place in two formats: in person ("on site") and by internet ("long distance").

On site participants arrive at the competition as a group with the supervisor and other team members. Travel and accommodations of on-site participants and their supervisors must be provided by the sending organizations.
Participants who choose the long distance form send their entries by internet.

The financial provision of the competition is based on contributions by the promoters, sponsors, and supporters of the contest, as well as the entry fees of participants. The cost to enter is US $15 per person, based upon the Central Bank of Russian Federation's exchange at the time of payment. The payment must be made by written order (transferred on account), or in cash.

The final stage program of the competition will include:

  • An exhibition of the original copies of participants' works,
  • Internet exposition of the participants' works,
  • Speeches by the prize-winners, with demonstration of their projects,
  • A practical science seminar.

The winners and their tutors will receive prizes, and all participants will receive certificates of participation.


The competition will be carried out in two stages:
  • Homework assignment
  • Qualification assignment

The homework assignment must be completed by the participant on his own (without any assistance) or under the supervision of an instructor on subjects that are outside of regular school programs. The homework is presented to the jury by the participant.


The qualification assignment is fulfilled during the competition. The time allowed for this assignment is 3 (three) hours.


For students attending the Competition in person, the qualification assignment is accomplished in the presence of the jury.

For long distance participants , the qualification assigment is put on the internet, on the competition day, at http://cnit.ssau.ru .

Three hours after the task declaration, the solution must be sent by email: cnit@cnit.ssau.ru . The jury will double check to be sure the solution was sent within the allotted time.

The competition includes 6 sections:
  1. Technical graphics and design (For on-site participants)

    Homework: hand written technical drawings, orthogonal axonometric views, assembly drawings of original machine-building details, units and devices, constructional, architectural drawings, etc.

    Qualification assignment: technical drawing of the third view of detail, based on two views presented.

  2. Geometrical modeling

    Homework: computer performed geometrical 3D models of technical and natural objects.

    Qualification assignment: geometrical 3D model creation by drawing a given object.

  3. Computer aided graphics and design

    Homework: orthogonal, axonometric detail images, assembly drawings or drawings of main view of the original devices, made with Application Program Ivariment (API).

    Qualification assignment:

    a.) On-site participants will make drawings of two orthographic projections of a given subject, and determine the third projection working without any outisde assistance.

    b.) Long-distance participants will draw all orthogonal projections based on axonometry of the given subject.

    c.) All students (on-side and long distance paticipants) will make drawings of a given detail (based on its axonometry) with all necessary sections.

  4. Computer aided painting

    Homework: raster paintings on any theme.

    Qualification assignment: creating paintings on a given theme.

  5. Applied computer aided graphcis (For on-site participants)

    Homework: images constructed by self-made programs: patterns, ornaments, drawings, graphics,diagrams, original program products, training systems (only the output will be judged), image processing programs, etc.

    Qualification assignment: algorithm composition, writing and compiling of the program for a given physical phenomenon, decorative design on program basis.

  6. Presentation and business graphics

    Homework: films, trademarks, postcards, etc., statistic data presented in graphical form.

    Qualification assignment: label or logo creation.

To take part in the competition:

No later that January 25, 1999, notify the organizing committee of your intention to participate. Use mail or email (cnit@cnit.ssau.ru) (and provide a list of the necessary hardware and software for on-site participants).

No later than February 25, 1999, send the following information to the organizing committee:

  • Completed application (see below)
  • Homework
  • Copy of payment commission or notification (by email) of the number and date of payment commission

The application must include:

  • Country, city, educational institution
  • Participant's full name, age, form/course
  • Tutor's full name, position, place of work, and statement of whether the homework was completed by the participant independently
  • The section of the competition in which the work is to be presented

For on-site participants the homework should be presented in a sealed envelope. On the outside of the envelope, please indicate the motto of the work, the competition section, the participant category (high school, professional school, university etc.), and all software (including the version) that was used to prepare the work.

In the "technical graphics and design" section, please send your work, hand drawn on Whatman paper of A3 or A4 format and supply two copies (e.g. xerox) of these drawings.

In the other sections, please present your work on a diskette with two printed or plotted copies (of A4 format).

All work will be returned to the participant at the end of the competition.

For long distance participants the application for the competition and the homework (in the format: .arj or .rar or .zip file) should be sent via email to cnit@cnit.ssau.ru

In the "Geometrical modeling" and "Computer aided graphics and design" sections please present your work in JGES or DSF format, and provide TIFF format portrayal as well.

In "Computer aided painting" and "Presentation and business graphics" please present your work in TIFF, JPEG or AVI format.

Applications received after February 2, 1999 must be accompanied by an entry fee of $US 30, based upon the Central Bank of Russian Federation's exchange at the time of payment.

No applications will be accepted after March 3, 1999. We cannot guarantee acceptance of any work that does not meet the required application procedure described above.
